Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc. is a grassroots 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of investigative reporting.
IRE was formed in 1975 to create a forum in which journalists throughout the world could help each other by sharing story ideas, newsgathering techniques and news sources. We are headquartered at the Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia, Mo.
We have nearly 4,500 members worldwide, including journalists in print broadcast and online media, retirees, journalism educators and students. Visit IRE's Web site, www.ire.org, to learn about everything the organization has to offer.
IRE operates the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting, (NICAR) a joint venture with the Missouri School of Journalism. It's the leading resource computer-assisted reporting, also known as CAR, an ever-expanding field in which journalists using databases and other computer technology to report and present stories. The Database Library maintains a collection of national datasets to provide efficient and affordable data access for CAR projects and breaking news.
IRE's training programs include national conferences on investigative reporting, computer-assisted reporting conferences and Boot Camps, plus regional or local workshops on reporting techniques. IRE staff and veteran journalists lead these sessions.
The Resource Center archives tipsheets produced by speakers at IRE training events, plus thousands of stories entered in the annual IRE Awards, which are cataloged with the entry questionnaire describing how the story was reported. Broadcast stories are available on tape or, in some cases, via Web video.
IRE also publishes a series of Beat Books, The Reporter's Handbook, and The IRE Journal, a bimonthly magazine devoted to how-to stories and articles about successful investigative projects.
